Small and marginal farmers (SMFs)

The agricultural sector has always been crucial to India’s economy, with farmers serving as its backbone. However, farmers face financial challenges due to disparities between rural and urban areas. This issue has affected a large portion of the country’s population since independence. The initiative aims to assist approximately 125 million small and marginal farmers across India.

To help communities facing economic and social challenges, both the central and state governments are working tirelessly. In 2018, the Government of India launched PM-Kisan (PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana) to support this cause. On February 28, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the 16th installment of PM Kisan. This year, 9 crore farmer families received Rs 2,000 each in their bank accounts through the PM Kisan Yojana.

History of PM-KISAN Scheme

Similarly, the Indian Government introduced a Farmer’s Investment Support Scheme to provide financial aid to farmers across the country. The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana was implemented on December 1st, 2018. According to the Government’s initial plan, this scheme will receive an annual allocation of Rs. 75,000 crore.
